Greggs launches vegan sausage roll

High street bakery chain Greggs is launching a vegan version of it’s popular sausage roll this week.

The company, which sells 1.5m of its traditional pork sausage rolls a week, says the new version mirrors the original classic with flaky pastry – made with vegetable oil – and a ‘bespoke’ Quorn filling.

Last year, animal welfare organisation Peta (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) launched a petition calling on Greggs to produce a vegan version of its sausage roll. The petition gathered over 20,000 signatures.

Roger Whiteside, chief executive at Greggs, said: “Like many food retailers we have seen increasing demand for vegetarian and vegan products. We have been trying to develop a vegan version of our famous sausage roll for some time now.

“It has not been easy but our taste panel customers all love this one, so we have decided to launch it as our contribution to Veganuary.”

Veganuary is a growing trend where thousands of people pledge to avoid consuming animal products for the month of January.

The new menu item will be be released in 950 Greggs stores on 3 January.
