Kraft to sell Somerdale site for housing

The now defunct Cadbury factory in Bristol is on the verge of being sold to be converted into housing. The Somerdale plant was closed after the confectioner’s takeover by Kraft Foods.

The new owner had pledged to keep the site open. But following the completion of the deal, the factory was shut and production relocated to Poland. Six hundred jobs were lost.

Kraft has announced it is in the final stages of negotiations with developers who want to build 600 new homes on the Somerdale site.

Kraft has since appointed property firm BNP Paribas to market the site and the empty factory. The sale is expected to net the American-owned multi-national around £50 million.

According to BNP Paribas the developer will lodge a planning application next month and work will start on the site early in 2013.
