BEPPS announces redesign, new HFSS-compliant flavour and new Sainsbury’s listing

BEPPS Snacks (www.beppssnacks.com) is on a mission to change the way we snack with a delicious range of pea based snacks, which hero the black eyed pea. September 2022 sees the London-based startup launch Great Taste Award winning Barbecue Black Eyed Pea Popped Snacks and Salt & Black Pepper Black Eyed Pea Popped Snacks in 70g sharing bags to 300 Sainsbury’s stores nationwide, within Free From, at an RRP of £1.80.

Currently listed in 500 Tesco stores within the Free From aisle, BEPPS’ distribution is growing to over 1500 Free From distribution points, as part of their acceleration strategy within grocery. BEPPS continues to scale as one of the fastest growing bagged snack brands within Free From (IRI data supported).

BEPPS’ new-look packaging is inspired by founder Eve’s heritage, using Ghanaian Adinkra symbols which have symbolic cultural meanings; the symbols were traditionally used to tell a story or to express thoughts or feelings and are an attractive and punchy graphic that will stand out on shelf.

Using retailer data to better understand their consumer base, BEPPS discovered that they over-index within Gen Z consumers, who are increasingly looking for healthy, vegan and gluten free snacks, with a point of difference. This research has also inspired BEPPS’ new packaging design, a generation obsessed with stickers, BEPPS showcases their new bubble sticker style logo and bolder, deeper pantones with neon hues to really make the packs pop.

The new packaging will hit shelves at the end of October 2022, alongside two new flavours: Vegan Cheeze Black Eyed Pea Popped Snacks and HFSS compliant Salt & Vinegar Black Eyed Pea Popped Snacks.

Founded by Eve Yankah, the brand is pioneering healthy, plant-based snacks that are loved by the whole family. Inspired by her daughter Giselle who loves eating crisps, Eve created BEPPS after recognising a need for healthier and more inclusive snacks for her child; Eve had her lightbulb moment when she remembered how much she loved eating black eyed peas when she was growing up.

With her mission in mind, Eve set out to find the best manufacturer to produce a tasty range of Black Eyed Pea Popped Snacks AKA BEPPS. The delicious and better for you UK-made snacks are vegan friendly, gluten free and always under 100 calories per serving. Starting at just 80p per pack, the accessible range ensures there is something for everyone to enjoy,

Not only are the filling and nutritious, delicious and fibre-rich pea, pulse and grain based snacks a great, low GI alternative to traditionally high calorie and sat fat, potato based snacks, they are also ethical too – the BEPPS Snacks ethos centres around ‘better for you’ and accessible food; Eve believes in the importance of creating a better world and so far over 60,000 packs of BEPPS have been donated to food banks via City Harvest in London.

Eve also believes that a good education should be every child’s right; as such, sales of BEPPS Snacks also contribute to the St Nicholas Mission Academy in Ghana, a school that strives to create a safe environment for children to learn by receiving free primary school education. BEPPS sponsor nine children to receive free education, nutritious meals, safe drinking water, basic healthcare and of course delicious BEPPS Snacks year-round.

For her leadership, impressive business milestones to date and her charity work, Eve has been named one of 15 Food Entrepreneurs to Watch in 2021 by the Great British Entrepreneur Awards; BEPPS Snacks was also chosen as a Finalist in the ‘Made in the UK’ category of the Great British Entrepreneur Awards 2021.
