Hackney Gelato goes back to Italian roots with new creation

Hackney Gelato, the celebrated UK maker of real Italian gelato and sorbetto, has gone back to its roots with its latest creation. Made with fresh milk and cream, the new Chocolate & Roasted Hazelnut Gelato (£5.49, 500ml) is a dark chocolate gelato rippled with roasted Piedmont hazelnuts from northern Italy and a sprinkle of sea salt. It is Hackney Gelato’s affectionate take on the classic Italian flavour Bacio and brings together two of the brand’s most in-demand flavours.

Hackney’s Hazelnut Gelato, made exclusively for restaurants, is hugely popular among high-end chefs in the capital, and the brand’s Dark Chocolate Sorbetto is its biggest seller and the highest-rated plant-based ice cream on Ocado. So, the brand said it seemed only right to combine the best elements of both into this new, ultimate blend – a rich, creamy and intensely nutty dark Chocolate & Roasted Hazelnut Gelato.

Hackney Gelato was founded by chefs Enrico Pavoncelli and Sam Newman in 2015. First sold at Brick Lane’s Sunday market in London, their slow churned gelato and sorbetto became so popular Enrico and Sam were soon supplying many of the capital’s best restaurants.

Six years on, Hackney Gelato has been awarded 22 Great Taste stars, has fans including Nigella Lawson and Jay Rayner, and is now on the menus of Michelin-starred venues.

Enrico and Sam said: “Bacio is a classic gelato on the menu in every gelateria in Italy. It’s indulgent and delicious. We’ve always wanted to create our own Bacio because it’s the gelato we loved most when we were kids growing up in Italy. We ate it by the bucketful when we were bambini. Our version is a little darker and richer and we love it.”

Hackney Gelato makes everything by hand in small batches in its East London kitchen.

The Chocolate & Roasted Hazelnut Gelato (£5.49 RRP for 500ml tubs) is available nationwide on Ocado and launched in early May in Whole Foods Market stores around London.

This addition to the range comes as research shows sales of luxury ice cream rocketed during the pandemic as people sought out high-end comfort desserts.
