A UK retailer specialising in retro confectionery has launched a national poll to discover the UK’s favourite sweet treat of yesteryear.

Florence Wren Sweets & Confectionery, based in York, is inviting members of the public to vote for their best-loved vintage sweets by filling out a form in store, sending an email or visiting its Facebook page. A ‘Top Ten’ of the nation’s favourite retro sweets will then be compiled, and one entrant will be chosen at random to receive a selection box of Florence Wren’s traditional confectionery.

Florence Wren opened a month ago and sweetie fans of all ages are discovering (or rediscovering) long-lost pleasures such as Sherbet Dip Dabs, Aniseed Balls, ‘Soor’ Plums and Bullseyes, to name but a few.

Florence Wren aims to offer a modern take on the traditional sweet shop, with a fresh, clean look that evokes past times without being overly ‘chintzy’. Florence Wren has also recently created a range of Theatre Treat bags to complement performances at the nearby York Theatre Royal, offering a 10% discount to theatre ticket holders.

Florence Wren was launched with support from the Whyte Knight Fund, an organisation that offers matched-loan funding to small businesses in the York area.

Anyone wishing to vote in the Florence Wren poll should visit the shop, email [email protected] or visit the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/florencewren.
