United Biscuits has announced that it is making changes to working practices and shift patterns that will cut 93 jobs at the McVitie’s Tollcross plant in Glasgow, Scotland.
The company says that the changes, which are accompanied by a “significant reinvestment” in the site, are necessary to keep the factory on a competitive footing. A spokesman says the company was investing in infrastructure, new products and production capability to secure the future of the Tollcross plant.
“Under these proposals, this investment will safeguard the future of the site and the roles of the vast majority of employees. However, changes to headcount requirements on different shifts and some working practices may result in some redundancies,” notes the spokesman.
Management and union representatives will meet next week as United Biscuits begins a collective consultation on the proposals.
