Cornish fudge wins award

A Cornish fudge producer’s chocolate fudge has been chosen as the best confectionery product in the South West.

The Buttermilk Confectionery Co, based in north Cornwall, won the Best of Confectionery category in the 2014 Taste of the West Awards with its Luxury All Butter Hand Broken Chocolate Fudge. In addition to the overall confectionery award, the artisan producer won five other accolades for its fudge varieties including one Gold award, three Silvers and one Bronze.

Tracy McDonnell Goad, who runs the business with her husband David, says: “The chocolate fudge is part of our new luxury range, which we are launching this month. All four varieties have a high butter content, which means they are beautifully rich and indulgent.

“It’s a real honour to have done so well at this year’s awards. The chocolate fudge also earned a Gold award, while our ginger, vanilla and assorted fudge won Silver and our luxury Irish Cream was awarded Bronze.”

The judges described the Luxury All Butter Hand Broken Chocolate Fudge as: “A melt in the mouth experience! It looks crumbly but is as smooth as silk. A lovely deep dark colour. Buttery, very chocolaty and utterly moreish.”

Taste of the West is a membership organisation for food and drink producers in the South West of England, covering Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire. Of nearly 1,000 products that were entered into the annual awards, 199 won a Gold award, 252 won Silver and 203 were awarded Bronze. Cornwall won 39 Gold product awards and 32 Gold awards in the Hospitality and Retail section. Chief executive of Taste of the West, John Sheaves, says: “Cornwall produces food and drink of an exceptionally high quality and continues to thrive in the Taste of the West Awards.

“The standard of entries from all the producers and hospitality and retail outlets from across the region has been exceptional and certainly much higher than in previous years.”
