Fairtrade sales soar
We are in the middle of Fairtrade Fortnight, running 27 February to 11 March, and I’m pleased to hear that the Foundation has said that both cocoa and sugar Fairtrade products have grown in number considerably.
In fact, it has been revealed that it is businesses in the sugar and confectionery industry that are stepping up more than ever to meet sustainability challenges, and deliver a better deal for small scale farmers and workers, and enable them to take their own steps towards a better future.
Whatever certification mark a product shows, either Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance or UTZ, (and many more I’m sure,) I think it shows a commitment to sustainability, which is important for the industry both now, and more importantly in the future.
However, I think there is a lot of confusion about the differences between all of these types of certification, which is something that needs to be addressed.
