Simpkins celebrates 100th anniversary with special liquorice offering & Taveners relaunch
Sheffield-based family run confectionery company Simpkins is celebrating its 100th anniversary as the World’s Original Travel Sweets this year.
Founded by Albert Leslie Simpkin on his return from WWI, A.L. Simpkin & Co has been producing tins of British confectionery since 1921, and has chosen to mark its 100th year in business by expanding its popular Nitpits Liquorice pellet brand and relaunching its Taveners Travel Tubs.
Firstly, the Simpkin family tasked their master sugar boilers to infuse and blend two iconic brands together to be retail packaged under the Nitpits brand in the famous Simpkins travel tin. Each liquorice drop is manufactured by batch process by traditional recipes and using the finest ingredients in copper pans to deliver the crisp taste and flavour delivery Simpkins is renowned for. The master sugar boilers crush and infuse the Nitpits pellets into the boiling and work it by hand to ensure an even mix throughout the batch. The resulting confection is sublime, in Simpkins’ words. In terms of taste, the first hit Is fruity, and then the subtle underlying tones of the Nitpits liquorice kicks through, giving customers a mouth-watering taste sensation.
Secondly, Taveners Travel Tubs, manufactured and distributed under the licence of Valeo foods, were relaunched during lockdown in 2020 by Simpkins. The brand has had an overhaul in design as well as new improved recipes, that hark back to the1920s when Taveners first started making Glucose boilings. Gone are the premix and automated manufacture of the confections; these sweets are made by hand by master sugar boilers in small batches using all natural and gluten free ingredients prior to being fed into state-of-the-art automatic forming and packaging lines.
