Afternoon Tea given an African twist

To celebrate Afternoon Tea Week (8-12 August) a pop up offering in London has given the traditional British fare of a unique twist by injecting some African flavour.

It will begin serving customers in September, but is offering food lovers a chance to sample the dishes early to mark Afternoon Tea Week in Eastbourne on 13-14 August.

Those visiting can expect to experience recipes by Lerato London using roasted plantains with African nut butters, cakes with Madagascan chocolate and organic Ugandan vanilla bean, traditional west African cookie dough and doughnut truffles with Ghanaian cacao.

For savoury option, there will be prawn and vegetable suya rolls, using west African aromatic spices found in popular street food. A vegetarian selection includes British grown lovage herbs, cucumber and pickled shallots combined with aromatic suya or spices.

The African Afternoon Tea will have a changing menu, enabling customers to experience a collection of African inspired dishes. The food will be accompanied by fine teas, such as the South African Red Bush and Malawi Antlers. The experience aims to give gourmands a contemporary experience that is both unique and familiar.

Lerato Umah-Shaylor, founder of Lerato London, said, “England is well known for its exquisite afternoon tea offerings but there’s nothing quite like my take on this traditional fare. It is bold, decadent and only tamed in size in keeping with the tradition of high tea. I am passionate about African cuisine and have been all my life, marrying together British tradition and the food I have grown up with can truly become a new tradition.”

Those who want to try Lerato London’s first African Afternoon Tea event can experience it on 18 September in a secret central London location.
